Feeding the homeless and needy in Bridlington
The Kingfisher Café is a small, registered charity which has been providing meals and support to vulnerable people since 2011 in the coastal town of Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire. We were previously a soup kitchen, but when premises became available the Cafe was established. We have a board of Trustees and submit our annual accounts to the Charity Commission in a timely fashion. This small grant will have a significant impact for our Charity, ensuring that we are able to provide a safe and warm cafe where beneficiaries can access additional support appropriate to their needs.
Bridlington is an area of deprivation with high levels of poverty, unemployment, homelessness, ill-health and older population. It has been reported that the number of rough sleepers in the East Riding of Yorkshire has doubled in the past five years. Each week we see a varying number of rough sleepers/homeless people and families on low-incomes come into our café for food, shelter, companionship and assistance. A small income is received from the general public who are also served in the café.
The reports that are written are usually factual and correct; we are the reality. The people that come to our café are quite often suffering from loneliness and isolation, so they are very pleased to find that our café aims to support and provide a safe and warm place to eat; somewhere where they can sit and will not be judged and will find a friendly face where they are always welcome.
Many of our volunteers have experienced homelessness and addictions, therefore they are able to help and understand the needs of those we are supporting.
“If it wasn’t for Gillian and all the volunteers at the Kingfisher Café my life could have been a whole lot worse, before I was aware of the Kingfisher Café my life was a very dark place, their compassion, caring, helpfulness and overall brilliant nature has been a god send to me”.
