Hull & East Yorkshire Children's University is providing schools in areas of disadvantage in Hull and the East Riding with access to dance and drama workshops for the 2019/20 academic year.
We want children to be exposed to the arts and to have an opportunity to express themselves creatively. School budget cuts mean that children have less and less access to the arts particularly in primary schools. We know the benefits of participating in the arts on children's mental health and confidence. Dance and drama have a positive impact on children's learning and development. Taking part in our dance and drama sessions gets children activity participating and will inspire them to possibly pursue further opportunities in the preforming arts.
Our dance and drama workshops are delivered by Chris Holmes. Chris has been working as a professional actor, singer and dancer for almost twenty years. He has choreographed many schools Rock Challenges with a number of them winning and then competing in regional finals. Chris brings passion energy and enthusiasm to every class he works with. These workshops give children from the most disadvantaged areas in the region access to dance and drama delivered by a professional that they would not have access to otherwise. Workshops are free to schools and they are delivered during school hours so that all children can participate.
The programme is fully subscribed until summer 2020. The following primary schools are taking part:
St. John's Beverley
A total of 1699 children will participate during the 2019/20 academic year in four dance or drama workshops over the period of a month culminating in a performance which their families can attend at the invitation of the school.
