Gilberdyke and Surrounding Villages Coronavirus Volunteers Group (GSVCVG) has been set up as a positive response to the COVID-19 situation to provide support for vulnerable individuals in the local area. Serving a community with a population of over 7000 people we are a small group of volunteers who are working hard to help ease the burden during these unprecedented times.
Gilberdyke and Surrounding Villages Coronavirus Volunteers Group (GSVCVG) has been set up as a positive response to the COVID-19 situation to provide support for vulnerable individuals in the local area.
We have raised funds to provide services and support to people in places identified as most needed in the local community. Including identifying people in need, bringing together services and facilitating the support safely.
The key work we are undertaking are:
• Meals on wheels (delivering meals to those unable to make meals for themselves)
• Prescription delivery (collection and delivery)
• Providing food parcels and essential supplies (for those who have been affected financially)
• Shopping (collection and delivery)
• Dog walking (for those unable to leave their homes)
• A buddy system (to speak over the telephone to those who are isolated and lonely)
• Entertainment and competitions (for households to undertake whilst in lockdown)
• Emergency repairs
We have delivered over a 2000 leaflets door to door in the local community to raise the profile of the group. We use social media to keep residents updated and to advertise local services which have remained open such as shops and local food take away services.
There are now over 50 registered volunteers who are undertaking the above listed jobs.
To date we have raised over £2500 which has been used to buy food and supplies for residents in need. Some of the money has been spent on personal protective equipment such as gloves and sanitizer to protect our volunteers.
Working with the local community we have organised a central Hubb at Gilberdyke Village Hall. The Hubb is managed on a rota basis by the volunteers and is open (following the strict guidance for social distancing rules) between 10am and 4pm seven days a week. Food and other supplies are stored safely at the Hubb and many local residents have called in for emergency supplies as they are in desperate need.
We have also registered with Beecan and other COVID-19 community groups in our region to enable us to share best practice and support each other with supplies. For example; the Howden community group ran low on potatoes and carrots and we were able to support them by sending some of our supplies to them.
Being out in the community has helped us identify some elderly vulnerable residents in need, one had had a fall and needed medical attention, others had not spoken to another human being for weeks or eaten properly for days. We have reported directly to the local authority about some of the residents we are supporting.
GSVCVG are working hard to meet the needs of the local community during these unprecedented times but we are running low on food and supplies and need further funding to be able to continue with the service for those who are desperately in need.
