Bubwith Daily Mile and cycling area. Outside development inspired by Covid and aimed particularly at younger people
Bubwith Leisure and Sports Centre is a Registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation, no. 1177049. We occupy a 6 acre site with tennis club, children's playground, and car park, and the Leisure Centre building and equipment garage. The rest is the field, on which at present are cricket and football pitches, one of each, and nothing else. Bubwith is a nuclear village, serving a wide rural area where nothing much exists in terms of facilities between Howden/Goole and Pocklington.
During lockdown we conducted a survey of local opinion, facilitated by East Riding of Yorkshire Council. A striking outcome of this was the need to expand the use of the field, with demand for walking, running and cycling facilities. The results were discussed with a consultant Kelly Gordon, paid for by Sport England, and a scheme devised with consultation with all interested parties and architectural and landscaping input. This will provide for all ages, but particularly for children, teenagers and young adults, for whom only very limited facilities exist at present.
The plan is to construct a track of all-weather artificial grass on a firm base circumnavigating the combined areas of the cricket and football pitches, and leading to a cycling area at the end of the field, where a proficiency area for beginners will be accompanied by a pump track, an undulating firm surface track for BMX and other bikes. The cycling area and the perimeter track will be illuminated to extend the usable season. Three times around the perimeter track will comprise The Bubwith Daily Mile.
The cricket square will be extended south away from the building to allow for extension of the seating terrace for spectators and to move it away from the rather vulnerable building. The cricket field boundary will move south, and the football field too, all by about 5 to 7 metres. Landscaping will soften the bareness of the present aspect, and seating and waste bins will be provided as finishing touches to the scheme. The new playground referred to in drawings is not included in this year's project.
The funding promised so far, £130,000, makes the Bubwith Daily Mile and the lighting viable so we now need to attract funding for the remainder of the project, the cycle area
